studio lighting, softbox for a white background?
i have brought a cotton muslin backdrop for my photos. i have just saw this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKByrO_LU-g
and was wondering if this homemade softbox can help me create a pure white background in my photos. as i am on a tight budget. thanks
i am shooting people here. and what is the most simple and easiest way of lighting the backdrop?
The key to having a pure white background is to have the exposure on it 1-2 stops brighter then what you will be using to photograph your subject. You can do this in a number of ways. You do not particularly need a “softbox” to do this. Almost any light will work.
You can have two lights on each side of the backdrop at a 45 degree angle (good if the model moves around a lot) or one light directly behind the model shinning on the background.
The “softbox” in the video is not really a softbox per se. The one in the video is to small if you wanted a nice soft light on your models, and it doesn’t have any diffusion material over the front. The key to soft boxes is a large size close to the models.

For the background you can buy work lights at home depot that put out a lot of power from very little money. you just need to make sure the color temperature is equal amongst all your lights (unless your shooting B&W).
