Do I need a new Sound Card and a Preamp for Home Recording?
Hello happy helpers,
(Question 1)
I’m want to start home recording. I will be recording Guitar, Bass,Vocals and more. I know I am going to need a preamp for this. But now I’m also hearing that I need an “External Sound Card” and an possibly “Audio Interface”. Do I need these as well as a preamp?
My current recording equipment…
• I have a ’08 MacBook Pro.
• I am currently using Garage Band ’08 and Audacity.
• I have a couple of Shure dynamic mics, SM58 and a PG57.
(Question 2)
I’m looking in buying a good quality preamp on a small budget, the ART Studio V3 seems to get good reviews and is said to be good for recording guitars. Can anyone suggest a good preamp, I can’t really spend over £100/$160, is it worth getting one with USB connection?
(Question 3)
If do a new Sound Card, Audio Interface or other audio equipment, can anyone suggest some good quality, equipment for a man on a low budget?
Thanks for helping the Save Riffs Foundation!
1. You sorta got. At entry level you will buy an “audio interface”. This replaces your sound card are performs these functions:
-preamp
-phantom power
-inputs
-outputs
-anologue to digital conversion
When you get more money you might invest in these things seperatell but thats in the 1000′s price range. Right now you simply need an interface and this can be had for 200$.
Those are great mics. I reccomend replacing the PG with an sm57.
The mac book should run any interface with no fuss.
2.Preamp. Its great to have a nice preamp and yes its very common to run preamps into interfaces just because usually that pre will be better than the interface pre.
Do not get USB connection. Just use the regular outputs of whatever the pre has. But I would personally record a guitar amp with an sm57 in combonation with something like ART studio v3. That moving air has life that you lose otherwise
3.Of course. I can have you recording 24 bit studio quality tracks with a super small budget. But its kind of hard to explain it here. Can you ask this question at www.audioneeds.com? Then there would be more than just me seeing yur question and there are links and resources on the site that we can refer you too such as budget interfaces and the good and bad of each. I don’t mind helping you here but man I swear it only takes 60 seconds to make an account and they will have you recording by sundown, no problem. www.audioneeds.com
