What specs do I need for a good video editing/visual effects desktop?
I want to get into visual effects, animation and video editing… but I don’t want to buy a name brand desktop. I want to build one. What specs would I need for a pc running Adobe After Effects, Cyberlink Power Director (or Sony Vegas), and possibly 3D Studio Max?
Thanks for your replies.
For that type of computer, you’ll need:
1) A solid quad-core processor (Core i5 750 or Core i7 920 if possible, Phenom II X4 955 or 965 on a budget).
Avoid the Athlon II X4 line for this type of machine, their lack of L3 cache hurts in video-related tasks. Also skip any core i3 or dual-core i5 processors. Those are nice gaming CPUs, but not so great for editing.
2) 6gb of DDR3 RAM
3) Large hard drive(s), probably a nice large external hard drive too.
4) Good quality power supply, probably 500W. Go with OCZ, Corsair, Antec, Seasonic. Better to have a high-quality psu that delivers stable, clean power and won’t blow out, taking other components with it.
5) Firewire port. If your motherboard doesn’t have one, get a $20 card.
You don’t need a particularly high-end graphics card for video editing. The GeForce GT240 and Radeon 5670 are more than powerful enough, and only cost about $80-$90. There’s no advantage to spending $180 on a high-end gaming card.

Scary Monsters $4.41 Some would argue that this is the last great Bowie album, and certainly his only great album of the ’80s. While it lacked the bite of its punk brethren at the time, it appealed to some fans of that genre and to middle-of-the-road rockers as well. Muscular playing met with no-frills production, and the product as a whole was infused with a gloriously arty style. “It’s No Game (Part I)” opens the al… |
