HELP MUSICIANS! Home Studio Equipment?!?
My boyfriend’s birthday is coming up. He is real passionate about his music, therefore he is real determined to make a home studio. Knowing that studio equipment is very expensive, i’ve been trying to find condensed microphones (preferably with a stand), or really great studio headphones. I’ve been shopping online, amazon.com has some pretty good ones. However, i’m not so sure about some of the brands. I’m looking for something under $200.00. I was really interested in the Dr. Dre’s Beats Headphones, however 350.00 is a bit expensive for just one pair of headphones. I’ve also checked Craigslist, not the greatest selection. Some brands i’m not so sure that will be the greatest of quality. I found a couple, called Apex & Omnitronix, are those good brands for studio equipment?

I was trying to find a package deal, one with headphones & a condensed microphone, or one that comes with a condenser on the side. Any suggestions?
I strongly recommend not buying the Beat by Dr. Dre headphones for him. These headphones have “hyped” bass which would throw studio recordings off and would not sound right because of the bass in the headphones. I have a pair of AKG K240s. These are very good quality studio headphones with a great response for frequency. The pair I own has been discontinued, however they came out with a new series called the K240 MKII. These are just as great or even better and around $200. A good pair of headphones is very hard to find under that price range. AKG also makes very good condenser microphones. The best thing to do about Condenser microphones is to buy them at a store and not online. Maybe tell him you want to buy him a microphone and take him to a Pro Audio shop. And let him pick it out. They will let him test it and listen to how the microphone sounds. Every microphone has a different sound. Or you can do that with headphones. What sounds good to me may not sound good to you or him since we all have different ways of hearing. As far the brands Apex and Omnitronix. I can’t tell you much because I have no experience with them. Also with package deals on headphones and condensers I don’t think they really do those often and if they do they will be of poor quality. Another side note with condenser microphones avoid any microphone that says it is an “Electret Condenser Microphone.” These are very poor in quality and do not do very well in recording. Good luck.
