Any difference between Canon efs 18-55mm f3.5 to Canon EF-S 17-55/2.8?
Hi,
Wondering what your thoughts on these lenses. Currently own the kit lens Canon 18-55mm f3.5, is there any point in getting the Canon EF-S 17-55/2.8? Other than the extra stops and the USM ring, I would like to shoot videos on my Canon 550 camera but will it improve with the extra light it could provide?
I would use the lens to shoot close ups of the eyes, thinking this might be the perfect lens.
Would there any noticeable differences between the two lenses? You professional advice very much appreciated.

@John J. S Thank you for the great advice. I’ll be mainly shooting head and shoulder shots talking really, maybe some make up tutorials so some close ups of the eyes etc.

Yes there’s a huge difference, for a start, the 18-55mm is ONLY f3.5 at 18mm, when you get to 55mm it’s f5.6 which is a whole two stops slower. The 17-55mm always has a max aperture of f2.8, which gives you a lot more versatility in low light, as well as more control over depth of field.
Add onto this the 17-55 is a semi-pro lens, this gives you better glass in the lens which means you get less distortion and fringing, and the a inner focus design which means you can twiddle the the focus ring at any time without needing to switch to manual.
Is it worth the extra money? I’m not so convinced, the 17-55mm is a little old now and was never the lens is should’ve been. The 18-55mm is good lens already, and the big price increase isn’t really justifiable. A 24-70mm f2.8L is worth it, as is the 15-85mm f3.5-5.6 IS.
