How dose a mixer work?
How do you use a mixer without a computer and some sort of recording software? Do you just mix by ear from the studio monitors (or speaker)
How is it possible to not be able to see what your doing when mixing?
Is there a video to show how people mix with just a mixer? I just wanna understand this lol
I’m just trying to understand it
Mixers have been around a lot longer than computers. They are used to control individual sound sources such as microphones or instruments, which are “mixed” together down to stereo, or even mono, for either a PA sound system, or recording.
We have had live concerts and recording for decades, and the main tool used by sound men and engineers is their ears. If an instrument is too loud, they use the mixer to turn it down. If too quiet, they can turn it up.
The term “mix” means something different now, so recording engineers use the term “editing” to describe creating the blend of instruments and vocals for a recording. It is still done by ear. If you were to try to make a song only by watching the meters, you would have an unusable mix.
For instance, it takes a lot more energy for a low note like a bass to be heard than a high sound, like a guitar. For them to be the same loudness, the guitar track won’t be turned up as much. You can’t know how much by watching a meter. You need to hear it.
These days, if you are trying to make a recording without a computer, you will need some sort of other recording device. They make pretty nice digital recording machines and the price has dropped. Still, if you already own a computer it might make more sense to get a good external soundcard, and some good free software from online. I don’t understand what you are mixing down to, what is capturing the recording?
You might use a mixer if you only had two inputs into your recording device, but wanted to record something with more mics, like drums. But you will be stuck with everything on two tracks, so if you didn’t get the blend right, you won’t be able to fix it later.
