taking my first studio lighting class next month want to get my lights before the class so Im not totally lost?
So what do you suggest. I have been told 3 light is best. But when I went online 3 lights are pretty expensive. Could I add another light later? What to look for when I buy? Im leaning more towards soft box lights instead of umbrellas but what about Continuous,Cool Flo,Strobe / Flash then what about watts? Any suggestions? Off subject. My sister in law bought her lighting kit not to long ago. And she took my family portraits. I told her that I would photo-shop our pictures because I knew she was busy. So she gave me the disk. Our pictures were not so great the lighting was so bad. My hubby had dark circles around eyes shadows everywhere and when I tried working on our pics with white backdrop I just couldn’t get the backdrop to look white without washing us out. Then pics with black backdrop we looked yellow or washed out. This has got to be a lighting issue. Right?
First off if you are in a studio lighting class that does not have lights for you to use you should be looking for a new program. Part of the point of taking the class Has to be testing diff. brands and Kinds of lighting. You are not going to want to buy lights till after you havsome solid light theory and experience w/ whats available. As for the lighting situation the white background is always going to look grey when the camera it set to a zero exposure because of the light meter. Its job is to take all of the light in a scene and average it to 18% grey. So if something is all white that meter is programed to average the exposreto 18% grey so your white will be grey always unless you over expose by about a stop to copensate. same for the black looking washed out, you need to under expose. Now you need to do some research into non-global chnges and masking if you want to be able to adjust the background w/out effecting the subject
