Can you help with product lighting in the studio?
I work for a company that shoots many of its own products – mostly colorguard flags (many of which are made of shiny fabrics), to be precise. At the moment, our studio “lighting system” isn’t giving us great results. We have a point-and-shoot Sony digital, and I don’t think it has any syncing ability.
I believe two softboxes would work for us – I’m looking at some on tabletopstudio-store.com. My only concern with the ones I see there are their tilting ability. For our photos, we lay the flags flat on a white board on the ground, so there are fewer folds and wrinkles, thus our lights point directly at the ground. In short, are there any specific softboxes/stands that can be tilted to face downward rather than at a 90-degree angle to the floor?
I would appreciate any brand suggestions, and perhaps what type of bulbs would work best. We aren’t working with a large budget, but I don’t want to suggest purchasing equipment that won’t last for more than a year. Thanks!
You may be able to get by with standard hot lights and a diffuser, hand held or other. Westcott makes some great ones, some with stands. Linked to one I have below.
Since the products aren’t moving, shutter speed isn’t an issue, so you don’t need really bright, fast strobes (although handy, I’m thinking cost here since you said it’s an issue). You can setup on a tripod and shoot as slow as you need (I’m assuming you have the rig to shoot down at the floor). You can even get daylight-balanced compact fluorescent lights, 100W each, and either shine them through the diffusers or bounce off the ceiling to soften the light.
