Can I mix my single studio strobe light with a “daylight” bulb for a two-light setup?
I’m on a photography budget. I purchased an Alienbees B800 to start with. That exhausted my budget. I heard if you can light with one light, the move to a multiple light setup should be easier. Anyway, I’m getting into stock photography and think I need a second light. The cheapest solution(in my head) would be to purchase a “daylight” fluorescent bulb and use as a second light. I believe it would have the same color temperature as the strobe. Is my thinking correct?
Thanks all. I can’t believe I didn’t think about the shutter speed and the possibility of the continuous light not being captured. I have my ab800 connected via sync cord. Maybe I’ll get this oh so popular YN560 and run my pc sync to it and trigger my 800.
If you use a continuous light, that will then be part of your ambient light (as opposed to flash). if you shoot at a low enough shutter speed to include the ambient in your shot, then, yes it will contribute to the image. the higher the shutter speed, the less the ambient light will be in the shot. If you shoot at 1/160 or so and above, its likely you’ll kill the ambient & just be left with flash.
It’s unlikely that the colour temperature would match exactly and you’d then be shooting under mixed lighting conditions, which is a pain to sort out in post.
I think your best bet is to get a smaller speedlight if all you’re looking for is a bit of fill – you can shoot mixes of speedlight & monolight flash. Something like a YN560 would only cost £60 and you could either optically slave it off your AB’s or get another trigger receiver for it (don’t know what you use to trigger you AB at present).
