What is the best Digital SLR for taking studio quality portraits for under $1000?
I am looking for a very good quality Digital SLR that I will be able to use along with some basic studio lighting to take pictures to rival a place like Sears. I am tired of being rushed to spend $200 on mediocre pictures. With 3 kids I spend around $800 a year on photos. I think I will be able to take better pictures than the 17 year old with a 1 day training class.
I am interested in finding a good camera to take good pictures. Specifically for posed pictures. All other commentary regarding skill level is unneccesary and unwanted. Thank You.

Do I think I will take pictures good enough to quit my job and become a photographer? No!!! Do I think with the right equipment, some training, and lots of practice that I can rival the $7/hr kid at Sears…Absolutely.
Any DSLR will work. What is important is the focal length of your lens.
Even a 6 mp sensored camera can do an excellent job with a 50 mm f/1.4 lens. You will need a tripod, background and two or three lights, so while you can get such a camera for under $470 and the 50 mm lens for around $450. That leaves less than $80 for your other equipment and of course you will have to learn how to use the equipment and get good at posing your three children. Nothing of course that cannot be accomplished if you take a couple of classes in photography and spend a few months working in a place like Sears learning what they do to get the shots they get
