alien bee question – so i’m wanting to put together a beginner’s photography studio and i need lighting.?
Alien bees have come up a lot. at the most, i could afford 2 alien bee b400 flash units and that would be stretching the budget ( http://alienbees.com/flash.html ). would this be enough watts for studio portraits? i would be doing people portraits, animal portraits, and some still life. would it be possible to just get one b400 with a reflector? also, i don’t have a separate flash for my camera – just a built in, so i couldn’t use that in addition – it would just be the alien bees. i’ve heard you need at least 1000 watts for portraits, but that’s way beyond my budget with alien bees. so would this be my best option for me? thanks!
B400 should be sufficient for head and shoulder shots, two or three people, still life and pets. It would be weak for full lengths. 150 watts direct or 300 bounced would be enough for head and shoulders/ 3/4 length portraits. I would not do the b400 with a reflector. If you buy the two B400, they could eventually become your background and fill….or hair lights as you add to your kit.
